Germany: EIB Supports Drone Startup Quantum Systems with Venture Debt

EIB Backs Quantum Systems' Drone Development with Venture Debt. Quantum Systems, a German drone startup, has secured a €10 million loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB). This venture debt financing allows Quantum to grow without giving up ownership control, unlike traditional equity financing.

Quantum's Focus: Quantum specializes in developing small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS) for both commercial and government applications.

Navy's Giant Underwater Drone: Northrop Grumman Unveiling the Manta Ray

Unveiling the Manta Ray: A Look at the Navy's Giant Underwater Drone. New images reveal just how massive this unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) truly is. We introduced you to the Manta Ray, a colossal underwater drone being developed by Northrop Grumman for DARPA. The Manta Ray program signifies the Department of Defense's significant investment in next-generation Navy UUVs.  This focus on underwater drone technology aligns with China's recent heavy investments in the field, highlighting its growing importance in future maritime operations. The release of these new images underscores the Navy's commitment to developing powerful and versatile underwater drones. The Manta Ray is a prime example of this cutting-edge technology, and its development promises to revolutionize naval warfare. 

DARPA recently released photos taken during the Manta Ray's successful in-water testing off the coast of Southern California. This marks a significant milestone for the program, which aims to create a new generation of long-endurance, payload-carrying UUVs. The sheer size of the Manta Ray is evident in a photo showing it being towed for testing. Another image puts its scale into perspective by depicting a DARPA program manager standing atop the Manta Ray. Designed to take on missions where humans can't go.

The Manta Ray boasts impressive capabilities: Long-duration, long-range operations: The Manta Ray can travel vast distances and stay submerged for extended periods.

Energy efficiency: It utilizes buoyancy-driven gliding for movement and can hibernate in a low-power state on the seabed.


Modular design: The UUV can be disassembled and transported in sections, enabling rapid global deployment.

Multiple payloads: Manta Ray features various payload bays to accommodate diverse naval missions.

Northrop Grumman isn't the only company vying for the Navy's contract. PacMar Technologies is also developing a Manta Ray prototype. Ultimately, the Navy seeks a new class of UUVs offering extended operation times and the ability to carry various payloads.


 

Skynex: A Cost-Effective Shield Against Drones Bolsters Ukraine's Defenses

Skynex, a German-made air defense system recently delivered to Ukraine. The ongoing war in Ukraine has highlighted the growing importance of drones on the battlefield. While high-tech air defense systems like Patriot missiles can take down drones, their high cost makes them impractical for every encounter . This blog post dives into what Skynex is, why it's crucial for Ukraine, and how it works.

What is Skynex?Developed by Rheinmetall, Skynex is a "networked air defense" system designed to counter various aerial threats, particularly drone swarms.  It's essentially a powerful, accurate gun mounted on a truck that excels at eliminating drones.


Why is it Important for Ukraine? Shooting down drones with expensive missiles like Patriots simply isn't sustainable.  Drones, especially those employed by Russia, are relatively cheap compared to missiles. Skynex offers a middle ground - a highly effective system that uses affordable ammunition (35mm Oerlikon Ahead rounds) costing significantly less than even the cheapest drone.

How Does Skynex Work? Skynex is a modular system, allowing for configuration based on the threat.  Details are limited, but it likely uses a combination of: Oerlikon Revolver Gun Mk3. This rapid-fire cannon (1,000 rounds per minute) with a 4,000-meter range forms the core of Skynex.

Sensors and Radars: These detect and identify incoming drones.

Oerlikon Skymaster Battle Management System: This coordinates all the elements for a targeted attack.

Oerlikon Ahead rounds explode near the target, releasing a cluster of tungsten sub-projectiles that maximize the chance of destroying the drone. With only two Skynex systems delivered so far, a decisive impact on the war is unlikely. However, their effectiveness likely means they're protecting critical Ukrainian targets, potentially even safeguarding their more powerful air defense systems from drone attacks.While Skynex may not single-handedly win the war, it provides a cost-effective solution for a growing threat, strengthening Ukraine's air defenses.

Graffiti: A Promising Pilot Program in Washington

Drones vs Graffiti: Washington's New Weapon in the Fight for Clean Infrastructure.Washington state is taking a novel approach to tackling a persistent problem “Graffiti on bridges and overpasses” . Their pilot program utilizes specially designed drones to spray paint over unwanted artwork in hard-to-reach locations. The first-of-its-kind program uses a modified water-spraying drone to paint over graffiti. A drone that paints over graffiti has been launched in Washington state under a new pilot program, according to a press release from the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT).

A Creative Solution: This program holds promise for several reasons.

Reaching the Unreachable: Traditional methods often require specialized equipment, putting workers at risk or driving up costs. Drones can access these areas safely and efficiently.

Cost-Effectiveness: By eliminating the need for specialized trucks and potentially reducing labour costs, drones could be a more budget-friendly solution.

Efficiency: The drones' maneuverability allows for quicker completion of graffiti removal projects.

Challenges, Despite the potential benefits, some hurdles remain.

Safety Regulations: Drones cannot be flown over active traffic lanes, requiring work zone closures or traffic slowdowns.

Technical Limitations: The technology is still under development, and the blog mentions initial malfunctions that required modifications.

Unforeseen Issues: As with any pilot program, unforeseen challenges may arise during field testing.

Looking Ahead: While the long-term success of the program remains to be seen, Washington's initiative showcases the potential of drones for graffiti removal.  If successful, this program could pave the way for other municipalities to adopt similar technologies, leading to cleaner infrastructure and reduced costs. Alphabet’s Wing and Walmart extend drone delivery Service.

Alphabet’s Wing and Walmart extend drone delivery to additional locations. Wing, a drone delivery company and part of Alphabet, is broadening its service area in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, increasing accessibility for customers. Initially introduced to the region in 2022, the company collaborates with Walmart to offer swift drone delivery directly from stores to homes. As of April 29, 2024, the service will be available from four Walmart locations: 9101 N Tarrant Parkway and 6401 NE Loop 820 in North Richland Hills, with the latter commencing operations on the same day; 8555 Preston Road in Frisco; and 801 W Main Street in Lewisville.

“We’ve been steadily expanding to additional stores ever since, as part of Walmart’s initiative to offer drone delivery to up to 75% of the DFW population,” said a Wing release.

This expansion is part of a broader effort to provide innovative and efficient delivery solutions to a larger customer base. Customers can place orders through the Wing Drone Delivery app, choosing from thousands of available items including groceries, snacks, and over-the-counter medicines. Orders are handled by Walmart employees who prepare and attach the packages to drones. 

These drones then deliver the items directly to a specified location on the customer’s property, using a tether system to lower packages safely. The drones, capable of flying at speeds of up to 65 mph, navigate autonomously to the delivery location, performing continuous health checks to ensure safe operation.

 After delivery, the drones return to the store, land on a charging pad, and prepare for the next delivery. The expansion of Wing’s drone delivery service aims to enhance the shopping experience by providing a fast, safe, and sustainable delivery option, reflecting the evolving landscape of logistics and customer service in the metroplex. Customers can check their delivery eligibility by entering their address on Wing’s dedicated webpage.

The MQ-9: A Controversial Workhorse of the US Military

The MQ-9 Reaper drone is a ubiquitous presence in the news, often associated with airstrikes and military operations. But there's more to this unmanned aircraft system (UAS) than meets the eye. Let's take a closer look at the Reaper's capabilities and its diverse uses. The U.S. Air Force prioritizes the Reaper's role as an "intelligence-collection asset," gathering vital information through its advanced sensors.  However, it can also be equipped with Hellfire missiles for targeted strikes. This versatility makes it a valuable tool for taking down high-profile targets and conducting reconnaissance missions. Beyond the battlefield, the Reaper serves on the domestic front too. U.S. Customs and Border Protection utilizes a non-weaponized version of the Reaper, the Predator B, to monitor and secure American borders. This aerial guardian helps identify and respond to threats before they escalate.


The Reaper boasts an impressive wingspan of 66 feet and a length of 36 feet.  Soaring to altitudes of 50,000 feet, it can cover vast distances with a range of 1,150 miles. Imagine a tireless sentinel patrolling the skies for over 27 hours – that's the Reaper's standard endurance. An extended-range version, equipped with additional fuel pods, can extend this to a staggering 34 hours.

A Controversial Workhorse , While the Reaper's contributions are undeniable, its use in airstrikes has sparked debate. The 2020 strike that killed Iranian General Soleimani and the 2021 strikes during the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan highlight the drone's controversial role in targeted killings. The Reaper's story is far from over. As technology evolves, we can expect its capabilities to expand further.  Whether it's safeguarding borders, providing critical intel, or assisting in disaster relief efforts, the Reaper drone will likely remain a key player in our skies for years to come.

From Tanker to Terminator: Boeing's MQ-25 Takes Aim at New Missions

The USA Navy's Boeing MQ-25 Stingray drone hasn't even landed on a carrier deck yet, but Boeing is already buzzing about its future potential. Forget just pumping gas – this unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) might soon be packing a punch. At the recent Sea Air Space conference, Boeing unveiled a surprising vision for the MQ-25, a weaponized version strapped with Lockheed Martin's Long Range Anti-Surface Missiles (LRASMs). This "attack Stingray" could take down enemy ships from a safe distance. The aerospace giant showed off such a lethal variation of the MQ-25 model outfitted with two Lockheed Martin-made Long Range Anti-Surface Missiles during the Sea Air Space conference.

 


The MQ-25's origins lie in a program designed for both aerial refuelling and strike missions. While aerial refuelling remains the top priority for now, Boeing sees potential for the drone to be a multi-tasking marvel. Imagine it gathering intel with surveillance gear or striking targets with deadly precision. The Navy acknowledges the MQ-25's potential for future roles, but emphasizes its primary function as a re-fuelling drone. However, they're open to exploring its capabilities as the "air wing of the future" takes shape. The MQ-25 discussions dovetail with the Navy's growing interest in drone wingmen, also known as collaborative combat aircraft (CCAs). These unmanned partners would fly alongside manned planes, adding muscle to missions.

The Navy envisions these CCAs as affordable, expendable options with a focus on teamwork. While the program is still in its early stages, the experience with the MQ-25 will pave the way for future drone wingmen. The Navy and Boeing's vision for the MQ-25 paints a picture of a versatile and adaptable drone. With refuelling, surveillance, and potentially even strike capabilities on the table, the MQ-25 could be a game-changer for future naval operations.
