General Atomics Pitches Gray Eagle Drone as FARA Replacement

General Atomics Pitches Gray Eagle Drone as FARA Replacement

General Atomics is making a play for the US Army's armed reconnaissance needs after the Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft (FARA) program's cancellation. Despite over $2 billion already spent, the Army cited "changing priorities" as the reason for ending the program.

This leaves a gap in the Army's capabilities, and General Atomics sees an opportunity with a modified version of their MQ-1C Gray Eagle drone.

"We're trying to jump into that [opportunity]," Dave Alexander, a company official, told Breaking Défense. The Gray Eagle, described by General Atomics as an advanced derivative of the MQ-9 Predator, boasts impressive features:

Endurance: 25 hours of flight time

Speed: 167 knots (309 kilometres/192 miles per hour)

Payload Capacity: Multiple options including electro-optical/infrared systems, synthetic aperture radar, and communications relay equipment

Safety: Triple-redundant avionics system for increased airworthiness

This modified Gray Eagle, potentially with Short Take-off and Landing (STOL) capability, could fulfil the Army's armed scout mission requirements. The drone can carry up to four Hellfire air-to-surface missiles.

The Army's decision to scrap FARA reflects a strategic shift. General Randy George emphasized the importance of "learning from the battlefield," citing the war in Ukraine as an example. The Army now prioritizes investment in "safer and less expensive" unmanned systems with diverse capabilities, including sensors and weapons.

Whether the Army accepts General Atomics' offer or pursues another competition remains to be seen. However, the Gray Eagle presents itself as a potential solution to the Army's evolving needs.

Soaring Tensions: Chinese Drone Buzzes Philippines as BrahMos Missiles Land

Soaring Tensions: Chinese Drone Buzzes Philippines as BrahMos Missiles Land

Dragon Eyes Over the Philippines with WZ-7 drone:

Tensions are crackling in the South China Sea like static electricity. The Philippines, locked in a territorial dispute with China, recently received a shipment of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles – a potent symbol of its growing military muscle. But just as the Indian transport planes were touching down, a Chinese WZ-7 Soaring Dragon drone, a high-tech aerial eagle, was spotted circling nearby.

This sighting is no mere coincidence. The WZ-7, with its distinctive diamond-shaped wings, is a powerful tool for surveillance. China's message is clear: they're watching. It's a move likely intended to intimidate the Philippines and flex their military might.

The timing adds another layer of intrigue. The drone's appearance coincides not only with the BrahMos delivery but also with the upcoming "Balikatan 2024" drills – a joint military exercise between the Philippines and the United States. China is especially unhappy about the US deploying the new Typhon missile system on Philippine soil.

So what exactly is this high-altitude hawk of the Chinese military? The WZ-7 Soaring Dragon boasts an impressive resume. Imagine a jet-powered machine soaring over 60,000 feet in the air, with a mind-blowing range of 4,350 miles. This aerial marvel can stay aloft for hours, silently gathering intel and keeping a watchful eye on its targets.

The drone's arrival is a stark reminder of the escalating tensions in the South China Sea. The Philippines' acquisition of the BrahMos missiles and the US involvement in the Balikatan drills are seen by China as a challenge to their dominance. This recent drone sighting is a strategic chess move, a way for China to showcase its own technological prowess and assert its presence in the region.

But the game is far from over. The Philippines, with its newfound BrahMos firepower and US backing, is no pushover. The upcoming Balikatan drills will be a crucial test, a chance for both sides to showcase their military capabilities.

One thing is certain: the skies over the South China Sea are becoming increasingly crowded, and the stakes are getting higher. Buckle up, because this geopolitical drama is only just beginning.

Is Zipline drone stock buy as a retail investor?

If you are not an accredited investor, there's still a way to get exposure to Zipline's business before its IPO.

Only public company that has invested in Zipline is Goldman Sachs (GS).  which participated in Zipline's Series C and D funding rounds.

Goldman Sachs owned 10% of Zipline, its stake would still be worth just ~0.3% of the entire business, which makes it a poor vehicle for gaining exposure to Zipline.

A better way for retail investors to get exposure is via venture capital funds, like the ARK Venture Fund, which owns Zipline. The minimum investment is just $500, and all U.S.-based investors are eligible to invest.
