China People's Liberation Army Navy has sent ripples through the world of naval technology with the apparent construction of the first dedicated drone carrier.  While details remain scarce, experts are scrambling to understand the purpose and capabilities of this unique vessel.

News of the drone carrier emerged in May 2024 thanks to a report by Naval News, a website specializing in naval defense.  The report, based on satellite imagery and insights from J. Michael Dahm, a China and aerospace expert, revealed the ship's existence and sparked a flurry of discussion.


Key Characteristics

Here's what we know so far about the enigmatic carrier: 

Construction: Construction began in 2022 at a shipyard along the Yangtze River.

Size: Significantly smaller than traditional aircraft carriers, boasting a flight deck roughly a third the length and half the width of its US and Chinese counterparts. For comparison, it's slightly smaller but wider than a World War II escort carrier.

Design: Features a low-lying flight deck, likely lacking a hangar underneath, and a catamaran-style hull with widely spaced hulls. A runway stretches along the left side, with an island superstructure positioned to the right.

Poland Strengthens Defenses with Bayraktar TB2 Drones

Poland bolsters defenses with completion of Bayraktar TB2 drone deliveries. On May 16, 2024, Poland celebrated a significant milestone in its defense modernization efforts with the completion of deliveries of the Bayraktar TB2 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to the Polish Air Force. This marks the culmination of a procurement process initiated in May 2021, driven by an urgent operational need. 



A New Era for Polish Air Power

 The ceremony at the 12th Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Base in MirosÅ‚awiec signified the arrival of the final batch of TB2 drones, completing a set of four.  These drones, known for their effectiveness in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, will significantly enhance Poland's aerial reconnaissance and strike capabilities. State Secretary in the Ministry of National Defense, PaweÅ‚ Bejda, emphasized the Bayraktar's potential, stating they "would be operated in the skies above the whole territory of Poland."

 

Technical Specifications and Capabilities

 Each set of Bayraktar TB2 UAVs delivered to Poland consists of six drones, three ground control stations, EO/IR sensors, weaponry, and spare parts. These medium-altitude, long-endurance (MALE) drones boast an impressive 22-hour flight time, allowing for extended operations without the need for constant refueling. Their capabilities extend beyond reconnaissance, as they are equipped with laser-guided munitions (MAM-L and MAM-C) for targeted strikes. AEVEX Unveils Mako “The Kamikaze-Capable USV”

AEVEX Aerospace recently unveiled its newest unmanned surface vehicle (USV), the Mako, at a show in Tampa. This light sea drone boasts a range of capabilities, including cargo carrying, personnel transport, intelligence gathering, and even kamikaze attacks.

Customizable for Diverse Missions

The Mako is designed to be adaptable.  Extra fuel tanks, first-person view (FPV) controls, a UAV launcher, and even weapon mounts can all be added depending on the mission. This versatility makes the Mako attractive for a variety of tasks.

Mako  Key Specifications:

Endurance: Up to 12.5 hours

Range: 250 nautical miles (463 kilometers)

Length: Mako - 11.4 feet (3.4 meters), Mako Lite - 9 feet (2.7 meters)

Beam: Mako - 4 feet (1.2 meters), Mako Lite - 3.10 feet (1.1 meter)

Weight (empty): Mako - 895 lbs (405 kg), Mako Lite - 455 lbs (206 kg)

Payload capacity: Mako - 200 lbs (90 kg), Mako Lite - 100 lbs (45 kg)

Unmanned Navigation and Control

Both Mako models are fully autonomous, utilizing GNSS navigation with a multi-constellation receiver for precise location tracking. They also have a base 900 MHz LOS radio for communication. AEVEX highlights the USV's ability to operate in GPS-denied environments using PNT (position, navigation, and timing) solutions.

Father-Son Built The World's High Speed Drone Peregrine 2 For Speed Record

Father-Son Duo Blazes to Drone Speed Record: The World's Fastest Drone is Built for Speed, Peregrine 2 Takes Flight.

A South African father and son team has just smashed the record for the world's fastest drone, built entirely through trial and error. The record-making attempt was performed on April 21, 2024. 


Breaking the Mold (Literally) 

Luke Bell, a YouTuber known for his creative projects, teamed up with his engineer dad, Mike, to create Peregrine 2 – a custom-made drone unlike any other. Their goal? To dethrone the current record holder and push the boundaries of drone technology. 

From Tennis Ball to Speed Demon 

This isn't the first time the Bells have collaborated on a record-breaking project.  Just last year, Luke won the GoPro $1 million challenge by transforming his GoPro into a tennis ball (designed by Mike!) and capturing incredible footage of his dog. This time, they set their sights even higher, aiming to outpace even the high-speed drone used by Red Bull to follow F1 champion Max Verstappen. 

Trial by Fire 

The journey to becoming the world's fastest drone wasn't smooth sailing.  Without access to a fancy wind tunnel, the Bells had to get creative. They tested their designs by holding them out of a car window and gauging their performance against the airflow.  The results?  Not pretty.  The initial prototypes kept bursting into flames due to overheating. 

Undeterred by Flames 

Refusing to give up, the Bells spent months redesigning Peregrine 2.  They implemented thicker motor wires and made numerous tweaks, finally creating a drone that could handle the high speeds without combusting. But there was still work to be done – this fireproof version wasn't quite record-breaking fast yet.

Record-Breaking Flight

After months of relentless engineering and problem-solving, the Bells were ready for their official record attempt.  This required multiple independent witnesses and two high-speed runs in opposing directions.  The pressure was on, but Peregrine 2 soared!  It clocked a blistering 298.74 miles per hour (480.23 kilometers per hour), officially becoming the world's fastest drone.  This feat also earned Peregrine 2 the title of the world's fastest camera drone, easily surpassing 258 miles per hour.

With the 300 mph mark tantalizingly close, the question remains: will the Bells be able to top their own record?  One thing's for sure – their relentless pursuit of innovation and their ability to overcome obstacles have made them pioneers in the world of drone technology.
